I found out about the Mothers Who Make network whilst I was pregnant. I met a grandmother who was a visual artist, a new mum who was a filmmaker, a mother who was an actor and her son had just left home. It was a great way to meet and collaborate with other people from different creative backgrounds who were also raising children. It made me feel visible at a time when I felt at threat from disappearing from my creative network. This meeting was instrumental in a shift that occurred for me, which allowed me to create an approach to working that supports having a young family. My daughter came to all the meetings with me when she was little, and now my son accompanies me. I’ve breastfed in the rehearsal room, held meetings whilst walking with my babies in slings and work at unconventional hours. My work as a producer on this project has encouraged me to be more visible in my dual roles, as I am always both.
